  Introduction

Marine Science Special Training Course (MST) is a 3-months training course at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor, Indonesia. The course was developed to educate Indonesian university students in Marine Sciences by using international teaching methodologies within Indonesia. Course language is English. This course can be seen as a way to provide better educated Indonesian recruits for the urgently needed marine sciences, NGO's or all kind of governmental institutions. In addition it serves as a platform for non-university staff and international lecturers to transfer their knowledge and experiences to the most talented Indonesian students. The MST addresses those students that are in the final year of graduating at IPB, graduated students and university lecturers from outside IPB. Most of them use the MST to prepare themselves for a teaching career within Indonesia, to obtain a higher degree within the country or abroad, or to join the fisheries and marine science industry.

How to protect the marine environment ???

The history of the MST

The MST topics and participating lecturers. 37 different lecturers participated in the MST 2006. Among others, the following different disciplines are taught: Oceanography, Marine Bacteriology, Biotechnology, Phyto- and Zooplankton, Stock Assessment, Fishing Technology, Mariculture, Marine Parasitology, Nekton, Tropical coastal ecosystems, Coastal Zone Management, Coral Reef Assessment, Scientific Writing and Communicating.

The development of the MST from 2001-2006. The MST originally started with 9 students in 2001 and increased the number of participants to 20 in 2005. In 2006, a total of 10 students from IPB and other Indonesian universities participated successfully. Until today, students from all over Indonesia and many different lecturers from IPB and also from other institutions such as LIPI and UNESCO have been involved. Many MST-"Alumni" are now lecturers in Indonesian universities, continue their studies abroad in Germany, Belgium and Japan or work in NGO`s or mariculture companies.

The MST is a sustainable and CHEAP method to improve Marine Science Education within Indonesia and also in other developing countries. Marine Science Education in general is very expensive and often neccessitates the availability of fellowships for talented students to continue their study in e.g. Europe, the USA or Japan. However, the number of participating students is very limited and many talented students do not succeed due to difficulties to pass the language hurdles. The costs for each student are very high, including language preparation classes and the costs for living abroad. The MST needs appr. 150-200 US$ for each student to teach them within 3.5 months the neccessary language skills, a broad overview into different marine science disciplines and to prepare them to continue their studies in or outside Indonesia.

Pictures from the last course (MST-2006). The following pictures illustrate some of the student´s field activities that are used to teach more practical experiences. Most emphasis is given to scientific data collection and the general understanding that the different topics in marine sciences are closely related to eachother. Modern research is interdisciplinary combining the expertise of several different research disciplines.
